In this article, I’m sharing my most recent experience getting my ears pierced and some tips that I learned along the way. Most people get their ears pierced at a younger age. But there are many who wait until they’re older, whether because of their parents’ choice or because they just weren’t interested in jewelry until later.
I want to talk about my up-to-date experience with ear piercings and how innovative piercing shops have become. I had such a positive experience, and I want to share what I learned about healing well.
The Piercings I Recently Got
I had my first hole pierced when I was 10. A couple of years ago, I got a second hole done, but it only took on one side. I ended up taking it out and letting it close. So I got that second hole redone. And I also got a third piercing on both sides.
Why You Should Go to a Professional Piercing Shop
The biggest key to ear piercings: do not go to Piercing Pagoda or Claire’s. Go to a piercing shop. They have come so far with the piercing process and the healing process. It’s important to seek a professional.
This is something that’s going to be on your body forever. Once you pierce a part of your body, you can’t change where the piercing is. It’s a permanent decision.
My Professional Piercing Experience
The girl who pierced me was incredibly thorough. I told her about my bad experience with my previous second hole – it bled a lot. She explained that many things go into proper piercing technique. The way it’s pierced has to work with your tissue. She understood the science behind it, which is exactly why you seek a professional.
The Piercing Process: Precision and Measurement
She sat me down in a chair. She drew a dot where she thought each piercing should be. Then she drew lines on my ear. This allowed her to measure the space between the second and third holes. She measured the space between the first and second. Then she matched them.
She didn’t just eyeball it. She measured to ensure the spacing was actually proportionate. We talked about how everyone’s anatomy is different. One of my ears is slightly different from the other. You have to take that into account when piercing.
My Unique Ear Anatomy
Here’s something interesting about my ears: I’m missing cartilage on part of my ear. Most people’s ears have cartilage that goes up in a curve. Mine doesn’t – it’s flat in that area.
What that means is I have more real estate on my ear for cartilage piercings. If I wanted to get cartilage piercings, they would be more visible than on the average person who has that cartilage. Obviously that entices me to consider more piercings in the future.
I’m not going to lie – when she pierced these new holes, it hurt. I’m a baby about pain. But the healing process has been so easy and smooth. If it continues this way, I would definitely consider getting more piercings.
The Healing Process: Two Days In
I don’t believe you can tell these piercings were done two days ago. They look almost completely healed. Obviously they aren’t because it’s only been two days. But the redness has gone down. The puffiness has gone down.
If I touch my ear near the piercings, it hurts. It’s very sensitive, which is expected. But overall, it’s been a clean healing experience.
Modern Piercing Aftercare: What’s Different
The Saline Spray Method
She gave me a saline spray. This is new to me. Before, people always told me to put cleaning solution on a Q-tip and rub it around. This is just a spray. I spray it on my ear twice a day.
If I notice any discharge when looking at my ear, I’ll spray a Q-tip and use it. Otherwise, I don’t touch the piercings.
The Number One Rule: Leave Your Piercings Alone
She said the number one thing is to leave your piercings alone while they’re healing. Do not touch them. Do not turn them.
I’d never been told that before. I was always told to turn your piercings while they’re healing. She explained that turning them rips the inside of your ears. If someone tells you to turn them, it’s because they’re using a cheap metal that could fuse to your skin. You shouldn’t have that metal in your ears.
What to Avoid During Healing
There are obvious things to avoid:
- Don’t swim
- Don’t submerge your head in water unless you’re showering
Showering is okay because it’s clean running water. Your shampoo and conditioner will touch the piercings – that’s inevitable. Just make sure when you get out, you dry them.
The Wet Hair Problem
She gave me an important tip: many people shower at night. I shower at night after my son goes to sleep. I tend to sleep with my hair wet.
She said the last thing you want is to encase your piercings with wet hair. You’re leaving a bunch of moisture there. First of all, it’s not hygienic. Second, it won’t help the piercings heal well. You’ll be prone to infection.
My Secret Weapon: The Piercing Pillow
I got a piercing pillow. It is incredibly comfortable for your ear when you’re sleeping.

I’ve also been wearing my hair up the past two days. Or just out of the way in a clip. I’ll probably do that again today. This makes it as easy as possible for my body to heal the piercings. That way I don’t have to worry about any of them closing again.
Important Disclaimer
I’m not a piercing professional. Please seek a piercing professional if you’re going to get any piercings. Don’t do piercings at home. It’s not safe. It’s not clean. It’s not a good idea.
I’m unique in the sense that I’m very sensitive to certain metals. So I don’t really have another choice but to be careful about where I get pierced.
Final Thoughts on Professional Ear Piercing
I seriously think you should seek a professional no matter what. They will hopefully guide you through the process properly.
I’m very happy with my new piercings. I wish I would have done this sooner. Obviously not while I was pregnant because that wasn’t an option. But I’m very satisfied with how they turned out and how well they’re healing.
