Lobe Piercing Jewelry Change Experience

The time has come. Today is the day I’m finally changing out my second lobe piercing for the first time.

Why This Is My Second Attempt

The first piercing was wrong. The placement wasn’t evenly spaced. I went to a different place and got them redone in July 2025. We took out the first set, let them close up, and then repierced them.

That means it’s been over 4 months since the second piercing. This is typically the amount of time when it’s safe to change out your jewelry. That’s when piercings are usually fully healed.

Preparing to Change the Lobe Piercing Jewelry

I’ve been a little nervous about this process. I don’t really have clear instructions for changing second lobe piercings. I got my first holes pierced when I was seven, so I don’t remember that experience. When I changed my cartilage piercing, the piercer changed it for me.

My only real instruction is that from 4+ months on, I can change my piercing. That’s it.

Removing the First Lobe Earrings

I’m taking out my first lobe piercings first. They’re going to get in the way, and we need all the space we can get.

Let me give you an up-close view of the current earring. When I got them done the first time, I had a cute little gem that I loved. But when I got them done the second time, they wanted me to get jewelry at that specific location.

I have these earrings that are more of an oval shape, pointed at the edges. I don’t love them. They twist around a lot and push forward. I’m over it and ready to change them out.

I don’t know if the backs pull out or snap off. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing.

Preparation and Sterilization

I washed my hands and put on gloves. I just don’t want any issues.

The New Jewelry

I’m putting in tiny baby huggie hoops. I wanted to get my second holes pierced specifically to wear their mini hoops.

It’s been over 6 months since I got these pierced. Actually, from the first time I got them pierced in February, it’s been a year. I’m ready for my mini huggie hoops.

Cleaning the New Earrings

I have a bottle of alcohol. I’m cleaning off the edges of the new earrings. With my first holes, I’ve had them done for so long that they don’t need to be cleaned as much. But I want to make sure these are really clean and sterilized.

Sometimes stuff still comes off of the second lobe piercings. I want to be better safe than sorry.

I’m spraying a bit of alcohol on the actual post that’s going in my ear. Then I’m wiping it down.

These gloves are so big they’re getting in my way. But I didn’t want to risk having anything on my hands.

Cleaning the Current Earrings Before Removal

I have one glove done. I don’t know why I’m acting so nervous. I change my earrings every single day in my first holes. I know what I’m doing. It’s going to be fine.

First, maybe I’ll clean my current earrings. They sometimes get stuff on them.

My Cleaning Method

I spray them on the front. I spray them on the back. Then I take a Q-tip and spray that as well. I go around the earring on both sides.

Not to be gross, but the discharge is still a little yellow after 6 months. If you’re watching this and planning to do this yourself or have already gotten your piercings done, this is what you can expect.

I’m drying the earring off now. It’s still a little wet. While we let that one dry, we’ll clean the other one.

The Aftercare Product I Used

I used the NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Mist. This is what I used to clean my jewelry the entire time. I really liked it. It worked really well. It’s what they recommended and sold at the piercing studio.

My Healing Experience

I never really gave an update on this piercing, but it went really well. I don’t think I had any issues or complications with it.

At this point, I’m sleeping on both sides now. I’m really using my piercing pillow a lot because the piercings are on both sides of my ear.

I’ve been letting these piercings heal since literally a year ago. I’m getting a little nervous now. I’m just nervous because I don’t know how quickly they could close.

I don’t want to put in the new earrings and have issues. These earrings are hypoallergenic, but they’re not full gold. It’s probably fine. I’m just going to do it.

Removing the First Earring

I don’t know if the back post screws off or pops off. You have to hold it a certain way.

I’m holding the earring on the front. Then I’m pulling on the back.

The Moment of Truth

I’m going to pull the earring out. I’m so scared. The post was bent. Hopefully my piercing hole isn’t bent.

There it is. There’s my little hole. Wow, that’s so weird.

Inserting the New Huggie Hoop

I’m looking in the viewfinder up close. I think the new earring is in. don’t know what I think of it, but I never know what I think right away.

I have my two little hoops. It didn’t hurt at all taking the old earring out. The only thing is the back was hard to pull off. The way they have it in, it’s stuck in there.

I’m going to clean the other huggie hoop.

It didn’t hurt at all. It didn’t hurt to put the new earring in either. This is wild.

What’s Next: Wearing Schedule

I don’t know at this point how often you can change out piercings. Basically, I’m going to leave these in and see if my ears are sensitive to them.

I remember with my first holes, they were really sensitive for a long time. I had to have nickel-free and hypoallergenic jewelry. Now, years later, they’re very low maintenance.

Removing the Second Earring

I cleaned the piercing area already. I cleaned the little huggie hoop. I’m wiping my gloves off from all the alcohol.

The Removal Technique

I bumped the earring forward a bit so I could get a hold of it from the front and the back. There’s no twisting involved. You just pull, but you have to pull pretty hard.

I can feel this one a little more than the other one. It didn’t hurt, but I’m just scared.

It’s different. With the first earring, I didn’t know if you should pull. This one hurts a little. I don’t want to say it hurts, but I can feel it.

Is it out? It’s out this time.

A Difference in Removal

This time, the pointy part came out first.

Let me check this earring out.

Inserting the Second Huggie Hoop

I can’t even see the hole for some reason. It must be the way my ear is positioned. The first hole I could see perfectly. You can see it when I move my ear. I have to look in the other mirror.

Final Thoughts: It Was Easy

I’m so dramatic. That was absolutely not difficult at all. But you just don’t really know until you do it.

This was totally easy. I would say if you’re 6 months or past that point and you haven’t changed your second lobe piercings out, you’re probably completely fine. I wouldn’t worry about it.
